Tiwa Savage Education – Tiwa Savage’s educational background is as follows: First, two went to Isale Eko Primary School, which was a neighborhood school. She then went to a local secondary school after completing her primary education. She was a diligent student who consistently scored high marks on tests. Savage also obtained a degree in Accounting from University of Kent.
Biography
Nigerian singer-songwriter, actress, and producer Tiwatope (Savage) was born and raised in Ile-Eko, Nigeria. She moved to London when she was 11 years old for her secondary school education. After five years in London, Savage started her career in the music industry as a back-up singer for well-known artists like George Michael and singer-songwriter Mary J Blige.
After competing on The X Factor UK and graduating from the College of Music (Berklee College), Savage signed a record label deal with Sony /ATV Music publishing in 2009.
Inspired by the success of Nigeria’s music industry, Savage returned to Nigeria in 2012 to sign with Mavin Records, appearing on the label’s 2012 compilation album, Solar Plexus.
Once Upon a Time is her debut studio album. It was released on July 3, 2013. The album was preceded by 7 singles: Kele Kele love, love me (3x), without my heart, ife wa gbona, folarin, olorun mi and eminado.
The album was shortlisted for Nigeria Entertainment Awards 2014’s ‘Best album of the year’ and was nominated for ‘Best R&B / Pop Album’ at the 2014 Headies.
R.E.D., Savage’s second studio album, was released on December 19, 2015. It was preceded by the release of two singles: “My Darlin” and “Standing Ovation.” Savage signed with management and publishing company Roc Nation in June 2016.
In September 2017, Savage released her debut EP, Sugarcane, which was nominated for a Best Album at the Nigerian Entertainment Awards. R.E.D. and Sugarcane were nominated for the Best Album at the 2018 Nigerian Music Awards.
Savage was the first African act to win the Best African Act award at the MTV Europe Music Awards in November 2018. In May 2019, Savage announced the end of her record deal with Mavin Records and the signing of a new contract with Universal Music Group.
She is a singer-songwriter who performs in both English and Yoruba, and her music is a mix of afrobeat, R&B and pop, as well as hip-hop. She has made a number of contributions to the music industry in Nigeria, including youth empowerment, breast cancer screening, and raising funds for building schools in Nigeria..
Career
Born on February 5, 1980, in isale Eko in Lagos state, Nigeria, Savage moved to London with her family when she was eleven years old. She played trombone for her school’s orchestra band during her secondary school years.
She went on to graduate from University of Kent with an accounting degree, and then began working at a bank in Scotland. Savage began working as a backup singer for British singer George Michael when she was 16 years old, and has since lent her vocals to many other musicians, including Mary J.Blige, Chaka Khan, Blu Cantrell, Emma Bunton, Kelly Clarkson,andrea Bocelli,and Miss Dynamite. In 2007, Savage went on to study music at Berklee college of music, where she says she was inspired by the young students and needed the school’s atmosphere.
Savage made her UK X Factor debut in 2006 and made it to the top 24, but was eliminated in the 12th place. She admitted that she found it difficult to cope with the spotlight, saying, “When I found out that I didn’t make it to the final 12, it was really tough. But you have to learn to embrace it until you get back home. Because people love you and want you to be strong. They don’t want you to crash and burn.”
In 2011, Savage hosted the 2nd season of the popular singing competition ‘Nigerian Idol’. In 2012, she made her feature film debut in ‘For Coloured Girls’ with co-star Joke Silva.
In 2013, Savage launched her own record label, ‘323 Entertainment’, with her ex-manager and husband, Tunji ‘Tee Billyz’ Balogun, who she got engaged to on February 5, 2013.
In 2012, Savage joined Mavin Records. She was one of the headliners on the label’s compilation album, Solar Plexus, released in 2012. During her time at Berklee College of music, she made connections with musicians Keith Harris and Derek Pate, as well as Scott Coleman and Radar Ellis.
According to Savage, she worked with producers Chuck Harmony and Warren “Oak” Felder, as well as Sossick. She said that her debut studio album will contain songs in her native language.
Savage was featured on a remix of “Oyi” in 2012, before working with Flavour on her own version.
On the occasion of Nigeria’s 52nd anniversary of independence, Savage performed a rendition of “Arise! O Compatriots!” for Ndani Session in November 2012.
In May 2013, Savage worked on her debut studio album, Once Upon a Time, which was released in May of the following year.
She worked with producers Waje and Praiz, as well as Timi Dakolo and Pamela Egoh, on the theme song “Higher” for Ovation Red Carol.

At the listening party, Savage announced the full album tracklist and named Iceberg Slim and Sarkodie, as well as General Pype, as featured artists on the album. The album was made available to the public on July 3, 2013. It was made available on iTunes the day before its release. Savage said she named the album “Once Upon a Time” to reflect the positive stories of her life. She also said she wanted to inspire other up-and-coming artists by sharing the story of how she, a little girl from Isale Eko, dreamed of being a star in her own right. The album was accompanied by seven singles: “Kele Kele love”, “Love me (3x)”, ‘Without My Heart’, “Ife wa Gbona”, ‘Folarin’, ‘Olorun Mi’ and ‘Eminado’. It also included political songs such as ‘Middle Passage’, which is about ‘the struggles of African men’ in a foreign country’. The album was nominated for ‘Best Album of the Year’ at 2014 Nigeria Entertainment Awards and ‘Best R&B / Pop Album’ at ‘The Headies 2014’.
In 2009 Savage signed a publishing contract with Sony /ATV Music Publishing, which gave her the opportunity to write songs for Babyface, Kat Deluna, Fantasia, Monica, and Mónika. She received songwriting credit for Monica’s soul ballad “Catch Me”.
Savage collaborated with Fantasia on “Collard Greens and Cornbread”, for which Fantasia was nominated for a Grammy in 2010. She also wrote Jaicko’s “Oh Yeah”, which featured Snoop Dogg, and Deluna’s “Push Push”, which featured Akon.
She also backed up vocals on Whitney Houston’s album “I Look to You” (2009). Savage moved back to Nigeria in 2012 and signed to Mavin Records.
She has been involved in a number of youth empowerment & breast cancer screening projects in Nigeria. She helped raise funds for an organization that built schools in her home town.
In July 2013, Savage signed an endorsement contract worth?30 million with MTN Nigeria. She has also signed endorsement contracts with Pepsi, Forte Oil, and Maggi.
Savage released “Love in Yellow” on 31 January 2014. It is a Valentine’s Day release. The song is a mix of retro r&b and funk. He was also featured on the 2014 single “Turn It Up” by Reekado banks.
On May 1, 2014, he released a remix of “Girlie O” by Patoranking. WizzyPro produced the remix.
On May 19, 2014, Savage collaborated with Dr. Sid and D’Prince on the song “Don Jazzy”. The song was released on May 1, 2014 by Mavin Records.
On July 7, 2014, Savage appeared on the live show of “MTV Africa Music Awards” alongside Migos’ Flavour N’abania and Davido. He was supported by Oskido and Professor.
Savage shot and directed the music video for “Girlie” in London.
On 28 May 2014, Savage released a music video for “Wanted”, which was directed by Moe Musa. In the video, Savage is wearing a naked bodysuit, and she is touching herself sensually. The video sparked a huge amount of public backlash on various social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. In June 2014, she collaborated on “Africa Rising”, a song for the DStv’s Africa Rising campaign. The campaign aims to encourage Africans to invest in community-related social projects. The accompanying music video was directed by Callback Dreams, and was released on 19 December 2015 at the Mauritius launch ceremony for Savage’s second studio album.
The title of the album is a combination of the words “R.E.” and “DANCE”, which stands for “Love, Emotion, and Dance”. The album was mainly produced by Savage, with additional tracks coming from Baby Fresh and Altims, as well as “Spellz”, “P2J”, and “Reekado Banks”. Guests on the album include Dr. Sid, “Iceberg Slim”.
The album was accompanied by two singles – “My Darlin” and “Standing Ovation”. The deluxe edition of the album was released on February 16, 2016, and featured guest vocalists Wizkid, P-Square, and R. E.D. It was nominated for the Best Album award at the 2016 Nigerian Entertainment Awards. Savage recorded the album during her pregnancy with her son, and it was made available free of charge for digital streaming on the MTN Music platform on December 21, 2015. In the first 24 hours following its release, the album became the most streamed album on the music platform. Savage promoted the album on the i-am -red.com website.
It was reported in the media in June 2016 that Savage has signed a management & publishing deal with the Nigerian label, Roc Nation, and on July 29, 2016, she officially announced the deal via her Instagram account.
Savage opened the gates of the Liberty Stage on the made in america festival, where she performed “Best of Me” (Remix) and “Young Paris”. On September 22, 2017, Savage launched her debut EP, Sugarcane, titled “Sugarcane”.
The EP was recorded in both English and Yoruba and features collaborations with producers, guest artists, and guest vocalist Wizkid. It is said to explore themes of love.
Savage told The Fader that she did not plan to release the EP but decided to put it out after recording so much material for her forthcoming album.
The album is said to be a mix of Afrobeat, Funk, House, Pop, R&B and Trombone.
On August 24, 2018, Savage performed at The O2’s Indigo venue in London. General admission tickets for the concert sold out hours before they were due to go on sale. Other acts on the bill included Don Jazzy (vocals), Reekado Banks (guitar), Di’Ja (vocals), Dr. SID (vocals), WSTRN (guitar, keyboards, keyboards, synthesizers, synthesizers, and vocals).
A pop-up shop was also held on Berwick Street prior to the concert.
On November 15, 2018, Savage won the Best African Act award at the 2018 MVMA (MTV Europe Music Awards, making her the first African woman to win in the category.
Produced by killer Tunez, “One” is a song about gratitude. “Afrobeat” and “smooth rhythm” are some of the main themes of the song.
“One” was released on December 7, 2018. The music video was directed by Clarence Peters and was shot on a beach at Osoroko in Lagos.
On December 2, 2018, Savage was announced as the headlining artist at the 2018 global citizen festival: Mandela 100. The festival was held on December 2nd, 3rd, and 4th respectively.
On January 2nd, 2019, YouTube removed “One” from its YouTube account due to alleged copyright violations. However, YouTube reinstated the video on March 2nd, 2019.
On March 13th, 2019, Savage was confirmed as one of the headlining artists at Wireless Festival 2019.
Universal Music Group announced on May 2nd, 2019 that Savage had signed a 7-year publishing/distribution deal with them.
On May 3rd, 2019, it was reported that Savage had quit Mavin Records.
Savage will executive produce all of her future projects under the same label, which is made up of her label, Regime Music Society, and her record label, Motown Records, which will distribute her new music through its operations in over 60 countries worldwide.
Savage was featured on “Keys to the kingdom”, a co-written track for Beyoncé’s soundtrack album, “The Gift”, in July 2019. She appeared alongside Mr Eazi on the track.
On September 5, 2019, Savage dropped “49-99”, her first single to be released under Motown Records, a song that references the line “49 sitting, 99 standing” from Fela kuti’s 1978 hit “Suffering and Smiling”. The rhythm of the song is a mix of afrobeat, r&b, and pop. The background harmonies are humming, and the snares are crisp. The song is accompanied by vibrant imagery and symbolism.
Meji Alabi directed the music video for 49-99, which was released on September 5, 2019.
In one of the video’s scenes, it pays homage to the famous 1972 photographs of schoolgirls from the African nation of Congolese. In another, she is laid out with long braids, reminiscent of Diana Ross’ late 1960s look.
Savage released “Attention” and “Owo Mi Da” as standalone singles on 19 November 2019. In “Attention,” she berates her love interest for not paying enough attention to their relationship, while in “Owo mi Da,” she makes harsh comments to an unnamed borrower.
She also performed background vocals on “Èkó,” a slow-burning, ballad-like track from Coldplay’s eighth studio album, “Everyday Life (2019”. On 18 August 2020, Savage released the track list for her upcoming album, “Celia,” and announced that the album would be dropping on 28 August 2020.
