Stanley Omah Didia (born May 19, 1997) is a Nigerian rapper and singer-songwriter, better known by his stage name Omah Lay. He rose to fame in early 2020 with the release of his self-made single “Bad Influence”, which quickly gained traction on social media platforms. Omah Lay stated that he had begun a new Afrobeats sound, and that his song “Holy Ghost” was one of the new sounds he was talking about. He also stated that his new album would contain all of these new sounds.

He comes from a musical background. His great-grandfather played musical instruments for the singer, Celestine Ukwu, before his untimely death in 1977. Lay’s father was a drummer. “My brother inspired me to start playing music,” Lay says. “He gave up while I was still playing, but now he follow me wherever i goes in the world.”

Career

Omah Lay began his career as a rapper under the stage name “Lil King.” He then went into songwriting and music production, which went largely unreported. He released “Do Not Disturb” in April 2019, followed by “Hello Brother” a month later.

In June 2019, he signed with a record label called KeyQaad and went on a 7-month break. During this break, he started working on his debut EP “Get Layd”. “I started working on Get Layd EP in August 2019,” he told OkayAfrica. “I had to take a break from social media, avoid a lot of things, and keep my head clear to get this project right. My first song I recorded on ‘Get Layd’ was ‘Bad Influence’. I recorded it before the songs we needed to put on the EP.” After his break, he released “Bad Influence” which became Nigeria’s most streamed song on Apple Music in late 2020.

2020

On February 14, 2020, Lay released “You,” his first single as a featured artist. On May 22, 2020, he released “Get Layd,” a five-track EP that peaked at number 1 on Nigeria’s Apple Music charts. In total, all five tracks on the EP reached the Apple Music top 15 for Nigeria, with “You” peaking at number 1.

In October 2020, Lay collaborated with Olamide on the song “Infinity”, which peaked at number one on the Apple Music Nigeria charts.

What Have We Done is Lay’s second five-song EP, released on 20 November. All five tracks made it to the top 12 on the Apple Music Nigeria charts, with “Godly” making it to number one.

On July 3, 2020, Lay became the first artist to be highlighted in Apple’s Africa Rising Campaign, which seeks to highlight African talent.

In December 2020, Lay was named to BBC Radio 1 Xtra’s annual “Hot for 2021” list.He was also the first African artist to feature on Audiomack’s “Up Now” program for emerging artists.

In 2021, he was named to the “20 artists to watch” list at Montreux’s Jazz Festival. In November 2020, he was named BET’s Amplified International Artist Of the Month for the month of November. At the 2020 Headies, Lay was nominated for four categories and won the Next Rated award.

On June 25, 2021, Lay collaborated with fellow Nigerian vocalist Alpha P on Masterkraft’s official remix of the Canadian singer Justin Bieber’s single “Peaches”. On July 8, 2021, Lay released his new single “Understand”. On March 3, 2022, Lay released his second collaboration with Bieber, “Attention”.
