Ayra Starr biography – award-winning singer, songwriter, and model, Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe is a Nigerian native Kwara state, Nigeria, born 14 June 2002. She is also better known professionally by her stage name, ayra starr. Ayra Starr made her debut in early 2021 with the release of her eponymous extended play and her hit track “away”. “away” peaked at number 4 on Nigeria’s turntable top 50 for two consecutive weeks and reached number 17 on U.S. Billboard’s Top Triller Global. “away” paved the way for her debut full-length album, “19 & dangerous,” released in august 2021.
The album is mainly classified as an Afropop album and an R&B album. The album has received positive reviews. Also the album has produced two top 40 singles in Nigeria. The album’s lead single “Bloody Samaritan” peaked at number one on the Top 50, making it the first solo album by a Nigerian woman to reach the number one spot.

Ayra Starr, the gorgeous singer, finished her primary and secondary education in Lagos state. She then went to Les Cours sonou University (Cotonou University) in Benin, where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts (BA) in international relations and “political science”. During her college years, her classmates used to tease her for her age and looks. To cope with the taunts, she turned to music. “I used to listen to “Nicki Minaj” on the way to school and I used to feel like the other Nicki Minaj.” Starr’s mother was a big fan of her musical career and always supported her singing aspirations.
Career
Starr signed with Lagos-based modeling agency Quove Models in August 2018. She then went on to work with Mazelle Studio and Complete Fashion Magazine as well as Esperanza Woman.
In 2019, she started to share her covers of songs by Andra Day, 2Face Idibia and others on social media. She said she picked her stage name because it means “woke” and “opening” and “I’m all about that.” She was also featured in Eri Ife’s “Dear Future Wife” music video.
December 2019 saw the release of an original song titled “Damage,” which she posted on Instagram. Thousands of people, including label exec Don Jazzy, heard the song, which secured her first record deal with Mavin Records.
In 2020, she began working with producer Louddaaa at Mavin Studios, Lagos, with the help of producers Don Jazzy and Louddaaa. Her debut extended play, self-titled “Away,” was released on January 22, 2021 via Mavin Records. The album was described as a “tear-jerking chronicle of love” or “a love-themed situation”, and “mixture of R&B / neo-soul and Afropop percussion”. “My goal with this record is to make music that appeals to young and old listeners alike,” she said. “I only wrote one song on this EP, but I co-wrote the other four with my brother Dami.” The EP quickly became the number one album on Nigeria iTunes, and Apple Music, as of March 2021. It has reached the number one spot on Apple Music in four other countries, and has accumulated more than 15 million streams on Spotify, YouTube, and Audio Mack. “Away” peaked at number 4 on Nigeria’s TurnTable Top 50, and number 17 on U.S. Billboard Top Triller Global. The song was also named by okayAfrica as one of the 9 best Nigerian songs of January 2021.
Ayra Starr’s “Ija” and “Away” remixes with Tokimonsta & Lilo were released in March and April respectively. Crayon’s “Twelve A.M.” EP featured her vocals on “In Sync.
She also performed at a virtual culture show at UC Berkeley called “The Olori Awards” organized by the Nigerian Students Association. On 28 April 2021, DITR’s official music video for the song “DITR” was released on YouTube through Mavin. In June 2021, she released the music video “Sare” through Mavin. The music video for “Sare” was directed by Afolabi Olalekan.
On 11 July, she performed on the Nigerian Idol season finale. On August 6, 2021, she released her first studio album, 19 & Dangerous. She collaborated with Louddaaa, who produced her EP, “Ayra Starr”, and new producers London and “Andre Vibez”. This was the first time she recorded with guest artists Fusheé and “CKay”. The album was met with positive reviews, with most critics describing its sound as mostly Afropop/R&B. The album yielded two top 40 singles, the first of which was “Bloody Messiah”, which became her first number one single on the “TurnTable Top 50” and stayed on the chart for several weeks. “Bloody Messiah” peaked at number one on the 27 September 2021 edition of the “Billboard” Hot 100, making her the first solo female artist to reach the top spot.
She made her debut on the Pandora Predictions chart. On August 28, 2021, she peaked at number 2 on the Billboard’s Next Big Sound chart. She was featured on “in the light” on Johnny Drille’s “Before We Fall Asleep”. On September 4, 2021, she was appointed brand ambassador for “Pepsi Nigeria”. The following day, she performed during the live eviction episode of “Big Brother Naija”. She worked with Cheque on “Dangerous” on his “Bravo” album.
