Adekunle Almoruf Kosoko (born 28 January 1987 in Lagos, Nigeria) is an Afrobeat singer and songwriter, better known by his stage name Adekunle Gold and AG Baby. Adekunle is currently under contract with Def Jam Recordings. He became famous for his 2015 single “Sade”, a highlife version of One Direction’s “Story of My Life”. He was signed to YBNLNation and released his self-titled debut studio album in 2015.

The album peaked at No. 7 on the “Billboard World Albums” chart. The album was preceded by three singles: “Sade”, “Orente” and “Pick Up”. Before signing to YBNL, Adekunle Gold told Nigerian Entertainment Today that he had designed the label’s official logo and worked on other designs for artists such as Lil Kesh, Viktoh and Olamide. Adekunle released his fifth studio album “Tequila ever After” in 2023, his first under Def Jam.

Adekunle was born into a royal family in Lagos. His parents are teachers and he went to primary and secondary schools in Lagos State. He also studied at Lagos State Polytechnic where he obtained his degree in Arts & Industrial Design.

Career

Adekunle’s interest in music began at a young age, when he listened to songs by “King Sunny Ade” and “Ebeneezer Obey”. During his teens, he sang in his church’s junior choir. He wrote his first song when he was 15 years old.

Adekunle decided to go solo in 2014 after he and a friend broke up a music group. He became known as the “King of Photoshop” after posting a photoshopped photo of him hugging “Tiwa Savage” on social media.

He released “Sade” on December 19, 2014, a cover of “Story of my Life” by One Direction. The song was well-received and nominated for “Best Alternative Song” at the Headies 2015.

After “Sade”, he released his first single “Orente” through the record label YBNL Nation on 5 March 2015, following his signing of a music contract with them. He was nominated for the Most promising act of the year category at City People Entertainment Awards 2015. On 18 July 2016, he announced the release date of his debut album “Gold”. The album features a cover and track list. The debut album is composed of 16 tracks and was produced by Pheelz, Masterkraft, B Banks, Sleekamo, Oscar & Seyikeyz. The album was released on July 25, three days earlier than the original scheduled release date. It peaked at number 7 on the Billboard world album chart for the week of August 13, 2016, and was critically acclaimed. After leaving YBNL Nation following the expiration of his contract, he announced the formation of his band “The 79th Element”, named after the atomic number of the gold. Adekunle Gold was unveiled as a brand ambassador of Unity Bank on 15 January 2018. On August 21, 2020, he released his highly anticipated album �.

Adekunle Gold released his highly anticipated fourth studio album “Catch me If You Can” on February 4, 2022. The album features 14 tracks and features guest appearances from: Davido, Fatoumata diawara, Lucky Daye, Stefflon Don, Foushee, and Ty Dolla $ign.

The album is sure to be one of the best of its kind and Adekunle has music production credits to his name, including: Seyifunmi, Davayo, Rymez, Lekka, TMXO, Tay Iwar, Blaise , Kali, Que Beats and Spax.

On March 2023, Billboard reported that Def Jam Recordings CEO Tunji Balogun confirmed Adekunle’s signing to the label.
